AAR M-107 locomotive wheel for heavy haul freight? Class C D 36-38" specs

1. Product Description

What is an AAR M-107 locomotive wheel and why does it fail in heavy-haul service?

An AAR M-107/M-208 locomotive wheel is a monobloc forged or rolled steel wheel manufactured for North American freight and heavy-haul locomotive service. Its job: transmit traction and braking forces from the rail to the bogie while withstanding extreme thermal and mechanical loads. When a wheel fails, you get tread shelling, thermal cracking, wheel flats, and derailment risk.

What are the AAR wheel classes and which one should you specify?

AAR M-107 defines five wheel classes based on carbon content, hardness, and application

What are the AAR wheel classes and which one should you specify?

AAR M-107 defines five wheel classes based on carbon content, hardness, and application:

Class Carbon (%) Brinell Hardness (HB) Application
L ≤ 0.47 197 – 277 High-speed, light wheel loads, severe braking
A 0.47 – 0.57 255 – 321 High-speed, severe braking, moderate loads
B 0.57 – 0.67 302 – 341 High-speed, severe braking, heavier loads
C 0.67 – 0.77 321 – 363 Light braking, heavy wheel loads
D 0.67 – 0.77 341 – 415 Low speeds, heavy braking, high loads

What wheel diameter do you need for your axle load?

Wagon Capacity Gross Rail Load Wheel Diameter Wheel Load Axles
125 ton 315,000 lbs 38″ 39,375 lbs 4
100 ton 263,000 lbs 36″ 32,875 lbs 4
77 ton 220,000 lbs 33″ 27,500 lbs 4

For 286,000 lb gross rail load (286K GRL) interchange service, wheels and axles must comply with AAR Standard S-286. Over 90% of bulk equipment acquired since 1991 has been rated for 286K GVW.

What are the common failure modes for heavy-haul locomotive wheels?

  • Thermal Mechanical Shelling (TMS) – One of the main causes for heavy-haul wheel removals in North America. Caused by prolonged tread braking combined with high wheel loads

  • Thermal cracking – Shortens wheel life; severe braking may result in complete wheel failure

  • Wheel flats, spalling, and tread band wear
