Product Description
1. What is a Gibson retaining ring and why does it fail in heavy-haul service?
A Gibson retaining ring is a shaped steel bar rolled into a hoop that secures the steel tyre (tire) to the wheel centre of a tyred railway wheel. Invented by J. Gibson of the British Great Western Railway, this ring fits into a precision-machined groove on the inside diameter of the tyre. After the tyre is shrink-fitted onto the wheel centre, hydraulic rolls swage the tyre lip down over the Gibson ring, locking it in place. Its job: prevent the tyre from separating from the wheel centre if the shrink-fit is lost due to overheating or brake-induced thermal expansion. When a Gibson ring fails, you get tyre movement, lateral displacement, and derailment risk
| Standard | Scope |
|---|---|
| AAR M-201 Grade B / B+ / C | Material specification for wheel centre and components |
| BS 5892-6 | Railway rolling stock materials – Wheelsets for traction and trailing stock |
| TB/T 1718 | Technical requirements for railway vehicle wheelset installation |
| GMRT2466 / GM/RT2466 | Railway wheelset manufacture and assembly – Tyre security requirements |
3. What are the key inspection criteria for Gibson rings per GMRT2466?
| Inspection Point | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Ring type | Single-piece ring only – make-up pieces are not permitted |
| Ring end gap | ≤ 3 mm maximum separation |
| Gap to rolled section | No continuous gap between ring and rolled-down tyre section |
| Intermittent gaps | ≤ 0.5 mm, not exceeding 50% of ring circumference |
| Gap to wheel centre face | No continuous gap between ring and vertical face of wheel centre |
4. Technical Specifications Table – Gibson Retaining Ring

5. Tyred Wheel Assembly Components Table
| Component | Description | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel Tyre (Tire) | Steel hoop, machined with locating shoulder and inner groove | Replaceable contact surface; absorbs tread wear |
| Wheel Centre | Cast/forged/rolled steel centre mounted on axle | Structural core; transfers load to axle |
| Gibson Ring | Shaped steel bar rolled into a hoop | Locks tyre to wheel centre; prevents separation |
| Tyre Lip | Rolled-down section of tyre that grips the Gibson ring | Mechanically locks ring in place |
